thorn in the side

thorn in the side

Satan's angel did his best to get me down; what he in fact did was push me to my knees. No danger then of walking around high and mighty! At first I didn't think of it as a gift, and begged God to remove it. Three times I did that, and then he told me, My grace is enough; it's all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness. Once I heard that, I was glad to let it happen. I quit focusing on the handicap and began appreciating the gift. It was a case of Christ's strength moving in on my weakness. This passage was taken from the Message Bible in the second epistle to the Corinthian in chapter 12 verses 7 to 9.

How can I think of a handicap as a gift? It almost seems impossible to think of a handicap as a gift but that is what the passage says Paul did. He recognized that it was then that Christ's strength is manifest. How is that so? In this world that we live in many of us are effective and efficient in our abilities to get things done, as we exercise the task over and over again until we become very good at it.

In Christendom this is evident when we participate in serving God. We can become so good at doing something that the Presence of God is not there at all in our serving. The "corporatization" of serving has crept in into many of our roles such that it is becoming easier to do any task without God being in it.

But what is impressing me today is that there is a "gift of handicap" which is placed in our circumstance so that God's grace become our dependency. Wow! This is a sobering thought because God wants us to depend on His grace to take us through life in its entirety. Being one with Him is a must in doing His bidding and a soldier needs the Commander in Chief for wisdom, guidance and direction.

Lord I pray Your grace will be sufficient for me, in Jesus name!
