They were are herbiverous! Good that you are an engineering student! You can imagine a flood which reached the top of the highest mountains and drowned all of them. The pressure of this weight for almost a year caused them to be found as fossils in a specific layer of the earth. Over the year the different civilization which were buried by their conquering enemies just destroyed the cities and built on top of them. That is a different kind of pressure! So yes there were dinosaurs but the current dating system used to identify the time when they were around may not be accurate.
